B-FAST (Belgian First Aid and Support team) is the Belgian organization for providing international assistance to disaster stricken countries. It brings together the expertise and capacities of the Belgian ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Home Affairs and Public Health. Enabling the Belgian government to provide in the fastest, most efficient and coherent way a wide range of specialized emergency response capacities to a country requesting assistance.

As an international partner, B-FAST participates in the international coordination mechanisms for dealing with disasters. The operations abroad are carried out in coordination with the international partners (UN, EU, NATO) and are based on the added value of B-FAST, e.g. the domains in which B-FAST can provide its expertise.

In CASCADE 2019, given the complex and diverse scenario, Belgium will participate with a unique mix of a flood rescue using boats and a CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) capacity, coming from the Belgian civil protection units of Home Affairs.

The Flood rescue module already participated in international exercises like the Modules field exercise Piemodex and the full-scale Riwaterex in 2018. It is currently undergoing the certification process 2019 to join the European Civil Protection Pool.

These technical capacities are supported by an internationally trained management and support team with experts of Health and Defense, ensuring the team can work in full autonomy, with sufficient and adapted telecommunication means, connected with the national and international actors and have their own medical care.

With its participation in CASCADE, the Belgian Civil Protection and B-FAST keep investing in the international exercising of its personnel and its preparedness to provide international assistance to countries stricken by a disaster.
